Interview With Laura Beatrice Clarke

Story | Interview | Opinion | 21 Oct 2023

What inspired you to start learning to dance tango?

I was inspired to dance Argentinian tango because of going to a tango stage show.

Did you have any previous training/lessons in tango or other dance styles?

I had danced ballroom and Latin just to bronze level then went onto salsa for a few years.

How long have you been coming to Leigh Tango and what do you like about it?

I think I’ve been coming to leigh for about 3 years. I love the fact it’s in Essex as really tired of always going to London to learn, I love that a beautiful salon style tango is taught and that we have 2 passionate and knowledgeable teachers. The floor is great, it’s totally inclusive to all. I’m very happy we now have milongas( dances ) in Essex.

How do you feel you have improved since taking lessons?

I always take lessons, you need to improve and learn constantly. At Leigh particularly I have been able to develop my style a little as I had none really before. We are encouraged to really listen to the music and have learnt about the different orchestras in more detail.

What has been your biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge for me which I am still working on is to follow well as I want to feel good in the arms of my leader.

Has taking tango lessons improved any other areas in your life?

I absolutely love the people you meet when dancing. So for me, the social side of dance has been great. I am actually a self-conscious person lacking in confidence so can express myself through dance. I am fitter, stronger, healthier and happier. I spend real quality time with my husband on holiday anywhere in the world and we go dancing almost every place.

What would you say to someone starting out or thinking of trying tango for the first time?

Enjoy each moment of the journey…knowing you will be quite a while before it’s truly possible to dance. Don’t expect too much of yourself as it is a difficult but magical dance. Get yourself some pretty dance shoes ( ladies!) and some tango music on your phone. Laugh( at yourself, it’s fine!)
